About
Martin van Aswegen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa’s Marine Mammal Research Program and Research Affiliate at the Alaska Whale Foundation. Since 2018, he has used drones to quantify the size, growth, and body condition of North Pacific humpback whales on their Hawaiian breeding and Southeast Alaskan feeding grounds. Martin’s current research utilizes non-invasive technologies and approaches to model wildlife bioenergetics in the context of their life history and exposure to natural and anthropogenic disturbance. He aims to leverage applied research and scientific communication to inform effective conservation management strategies.
