A Hub for Marine Science Unlike Any Other

As a global leader in marine research, education, and stewardship, HIMB leverages its unique facilities and location to advance ocean science. Situated in Kāne‘ohe Bay, we provide direct access to diverse and interconnected ecosystems—from coral reefs and estuaries to the deep ocean.

Our researchers, educators, and students benefit from robust infrastructure, including technical equipment, boating and diving support, and housing. This comprehensive support system makes it possible to conduct innovative, impactful science with both laboratory and field-based approaches.

Shared Facilities & Technical Equipment

Genetics Core Facility

The Core Facility at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology provides technical services and support for the faculty and students doing research at HIMB and the University of Hawai‘i system, as well as other institutions worldwide.

Confocal Microscope Facilities

The HIMB Confocal Microscope Facility houses a Zeiss LSM 710 laser-scanning confocal microscope that is able to generate high-resolution images of fluorescent specimens. It is especially suited for live cell imaging.

HIMB Coral Nursery

The Coral Nursery at The Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) is a collaborative space where science, restoration, and community intersect.

Managed by the ToBo Lab, the nursery provides stock coral to various graduate and undergraduate research projects, and is a living history of bleaching patterns tracked through bi-monthly 3D photogrammetry.

Small Group Meeting Spaces & Classrooms

Pauley-Pagen Library

The library space has beautiful large windows allowing for natural light throughout the room, a conference table that can comfortably accommodate 10 people and works well for small meetings.

Lagoon Pavilion

The Lagoon Pavilion, also known as the Beach House, is an open-air pavilion with a kitchen, grill, and bathrooms located next to a saltwater pond, and is an ideal setting for gathering as a community. The Beach House is generally available on a first-come, first-served basis as well as serves as the kitchen for our Lanai Suite guests.

NSF Classroom

The NSF Classroom is located just a few steps from the ocean, making it an excellent choice for groups transitioning to and from the field. The climate-controlled environment is suitable for engaging lessons and hands-on experiments. This classroom can also serve as a meeting space.

The Marine Science Research Learning Center

The Marine Science Research Learning Center was opened in April of 2010 and is where our marine education curriculum is taught. The center is designed as a laboratory-classroom, equipped with student laptops, digital microscopes, and associated scientific equipment and supplies. Students have quick access to field sites, as they are just footsteps away from the shoreline of Moku o Lo‘e.
