Originally from Northern Europe (Denmark) Dr. Johansen has spent over 20 years working all over the globe from Australia, South America, the Middle East, Europe, and Austral-Asia to the USA. As a leading expert in the ecological physiology and behavioral ecology of tropical reef fishes, the Fish Resilience Program focuses on how species react and adapt to natural and human-induced environmental stress.
Research teams in the Fish Resilience Program use innovative combinations of field and laboratory techniques to understand impacts of disturbances on species health and abundance, with three primary aims:
1) Reveal what happens to coral reef fishes when they are exposed to escalating environmental stress (local and global stressors alike)
2) Quantify the exact conditions reef fishes need (or can tolerate) in order to thrive
3) Provide scalable solutions to preserve, restore and increase reef fish and fisheries productivity
