Kacie Kajihara, a first year PhD student in the Aquatic Microbial Ecology Lab at Hawaiʻi
Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), was announced as this year’s winner of the Denise B.
Evans Fellowship in Oceanographic Research for her proposal entitled “Quantifying
recalcitrant marine bacteria to establish cultures and physiological baselines.”
“I am incredibly grateful and honored!” emphasizes Kajihara of the achievement. “I must
extend a huge mahalo to Rappé lab members past and present, without whom this proposed
work would not be possible.”
Mike Rappé, Principal Investigator of the HIMB Aquatic Microbial Ecology Lab, is Kajihara’s
advisor. “Once you meet Kacie and interact with her on a professional level, it becomes
abundantly clear why she was selected for the Evans Fellowship,” he explains. “At this stage
of her career, Kacie’s scientific maturity is off the charts, her writing is excellent, and her
ability to really articulate the broader importance and implications of her research is
impressive. Plus, Kacie is studying marine microbes – what could be more cool than that?!”
